Mati is available on Desktop (Web) and mobile (iOS, Android)
Mati makes sure that the person in front of the camera and the person on the document look the same. A pretty common fraud is to simply download some random ID card from the internet. By making a face match, you assure yourself that the document presented indeed belongs to the user verifying herself.
Mati uses regular computer vision as well as deep neural networks, trained on massive datasets to make a face match that works for all countries. Our models are trained so that the worst thing that can happen is that the picture on the document is old or deteriorated and that user will get flagged, and we will send that user to manual review when we send you the user information on your backend via webhook.
A very well known attack is a user putting a printed picture (the tech version a picture of someone on a smartphone) in front of the camera during the verification process.
On top of facial recognition algorithms, Mati has developed different types of biometric AI models that make sure users in front of the camera are real people, and not printed pictures, or a picture on a smartphone. Mati’s strategy to assure your company that your database is not filled with fake pictures of faces, is to record a small video of each user during the verification flow (5-7 seconds) where we ask the user to move his face. We then have AI models that will analyse the face movements, and will be able to tell with extreme accuracy if the user in front of the camera is real or fake.
Two very common attacks companies see are fraudsters replacing either the text or the image of a document in to fake it. People usually do that to pass the face match, while stealing the identity of someone else. A typical thief would rob money at a loan company, and then try to do the same with similar companies, but under different names. Or even worst, at the same company! They just cannot present their real ID card because it has already been flagged, and most probably entered in some database or global watchlist. Checking for document authenticity is probably the hardest to check for a company, but also probably the most valuable. Because if you only OCR (Optical Character Recognition, aka document reading) a document, and perform no document authenticity, you put yourself at risk of one day discovering that many of your users are fake.
It goes without saying that Mati’s mission being to securely verify users, we also check for document authenticity
With Mati you have the opportunity to customise your verification flow by choosing what documents your users will need to upload. And we keep adding new documents. Here are the documents we support, and associated fields (when available on document):
Mati can read the documents from all countries, as long as the alphabet is latin (United States, Central American, South America, Europe, Australia, etc…). We extract the most important information from your users’ documents, such as name, date of birth, document number, emission date, expiry date, address. Depending on the origin of the document, every field is not always present. We extract the information when it is present, and let you know when we could not find a field.
Now that you understand that Mati makes sure that the user is alive, the document is real, with text extracted, you also want to know if that person is a dangerous person. And probably not accept him to your service if we find him/her in some Global Watch list.
We check for global terrorism watchlists, International wanted criminal lists, sanctioned criminal lists, anti-money laundry list. And we always keep adding more.
These checks usually cost up to 10$ on the market. But our goal is to provide every company with the best verification possible, and making it 10$ would be absolutely cost prohibitive. We hope that give that feature away for almost fee will stop horrible crimes that start to occur frequently in the sharing economy ❤️
(available only in some countries)
For countries such as Mexico, the government has databases that can be accessed in order to validate that the information on an ID is correct. The ID number, the expiration date, sometimes even the picture of the person. However, this is not available in most countries. Passport is an example of a document which has no global database, and therefore cannot be validated.
Because every company asks for a different document, it’s important to notice that your verification flow is customizable. Meaning that you can choose what document(s) to ask your users. If you signup at Mati, you will see our verification flow builder where you can tick what document to ask, and customize your flow in case you require a specific one, or would like to give your users an option between a few different documents. Other customisation options are available from your dashboard, such as the theme of your verification, the languages, and more!
